Should We Procreate? 1 Year, 6 Months ago

Hey there,
This is it. We are discussing whether procreating is a wise decision at this stage on earth.
Here's an old article that appeared in the U.K. Vegan Society's magazine: Should Vegans Procreate?
Although I don't agree with some of the arguments presented, I think it's a good starter.
Bring it on!

Veganism is simply the acknowledgment that a replaceable and fleeting pleasure isn\'t more valuable than someone\'s life and liberty.

Q: I'm extra smart. Shouldn't I pass on my genes?
Well, could you pass a minimal intelligence test if one were required for a "license to breed"?
To find out, simply answer this question:
In light of the 40,000 children dying of malnutrition each day, and considering the number of species going extinct as a result of our excessive reproduction, do you think it would be a good idea to create another of yourself?
YES
NO
Thank you for playing.

Sam, is there a poll option for creating threads? Can u start a poll on this thread?
There are millions of parentless children in the world desperate for a home. And it costs 30 Grand to adopt just one! Plus loads of frivilous politics like having to be Catholic to qualify, and having to be very rich, married, and not being allowed to be fat, etc. Meanwhile children are dying.

Hi,
I think humans do to ourselves what we do to our own pets really. Fail to control our breeding and become overpopulated. There isn't enough to go round. I don't plan on having children for the sake of the planet.

Unless you grow your own crops, you will exist at the expense of non-humans who get caught in technological machinery and get killed for your benefit. Whether it's a field mouse who gets chopped up when your wheat is harvested, or a squirrel who accidentally gets run over by your car when it's dark outside, or some other animal who is unlucky enough to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, you hurt animals. End of story. You hurt animals, and so do I. Creating more humans will inevitably hurt more animals. We didn't choose to be born, so we don't have much choice in the matter, but we can choose to not compound the mistake our parents made by procreating even further.
If you accept the premise that the life of a human child, yours or anybody else's, does not hold greater moral worth than the life of a squirrel, rabbit, deer, or insect, then you can have no justification for breeding. You can say you'll raise your kids to be vegan advocates and they'll end up doing more good than bad, but do you really want to go down that road of utilitarianism?
Bottom line, don't breed. There are a plethora of additional reasons, but they're unnecessary because none of them hold greater significance than the reasons described above.
