Bought it, haven't read it. There are lots of excerpts online, though.

I heard him speak recently, and I liked what he had to say. It's important to keep in mind that he's not coming from an AR perspective, and he admits to not being strictly vegan (yet) although he acknowledges that it's best. He's still a young man on a journey.

Darlings, why would u bother to read this "happy meat" promotional crap? This book would be no different to the "Omnivore's Dilema". Without reading neither myself, I can tell u what will be in it: that factory farms are terrible, that family farms are wonderful, that free range farms are the answer. They'll also tell you how terrible factory farms are for the environment, and how good free range farms are. They'll tell u to eat less meat and eat only organic free range happy meat. They'll tell you that going vegan is the best and most "admirable" option, but that it's extreme and way too hard so you should just try your best and eat happy meat instead. What the book won't tell you is that free range is not free and that cage free is has a cage. They won't tell you that free range and organic meat, dairy and eggs is every bit as torturous, painful for the animals and outright unethical as conventional raised animals. The book won't tell you how easy it is to go vegan and that going vegan is the moral baseline for respecting animals. Veganism is not something to aspire to and admire in "brave" people (who sacrifice so much and have special super-human/Ghandian qualities), rather veganism is the minimal baseline for practicing non-violence and it's the easiest thing you could ever do.

Lots of love and truth,

Desert Girl

Dear DG,

You know I agree with your ethical views, but I don't think it's reasonable to talk about books one hasn't read.

Short post. Lotsa love for ya.

Samuel.

Veganism is simply the acknowledgment that a replaceable and fleeting pleasure isn\'t more valuable than someone\'s life and liberty.

Actually you couldn't be more misinformed about the book's purpose/nature, DG. In fact he's gone on national television here in the US talking specifically about why giving up eggs is the most important thing one can do if one wants to eat compassionately.

However, the knee-jerk reaction is common - I've heard it from others who also haven't read the book or given it a chance because the author isn't as advanced in his process as they are.

As for veganism being hard or easy...no comment!

Edited to add this brief write-up:

I can't find it, but one review I really liked detailed exactly why he thinks Pollan is an a$$.

At least I mentioned I hadn't read them.

I didn't read the books but I had heard other people talking about them. Who has time to read books these days -Sheesh!

I did however listen to radio interviews of these two idiots and a recent TV interview of Foer on Ellen De Generes (who married a vegan wife). They don't into go into veganism these days, they begin by saying "If you think going vegetarian is too extreme then you can eat free-range/happy meat or eat less, or eat fish," or they say "You don't have to go as far as eating vegetarian food..." you see they don't even discuss it as a possibility. The Ellen show was sponsored by McDonalds that day.

Omnivor's Dilemma -big fkn dilemma! He should have called it the Murderer's Dilemma, or the Rapist's Dilemma. Oh kill them nicely, yeah that makes it moral! NOT.

So I have not read the books, but got a summary of their grave moral confusion which is unfortunately spreading as people read their books. Eating Animals does not promote veganism but promotes eating animals raised on small animal farms. I know because I heard him say it on the radio. We must do all we can to quash the happy meat movement by spreading the truth about how free range farms are every bit as cruel as factory farms.

Cheers
