Here's an interview by news anchor Katie Couric with popular talk show host Ellen DeGeneres (you Aussies know her as Portia de Rossi's wife). Ellen is vegan and sometimes has chefs and other guests talking about animal issues. I doubt the network will air the entire interview, but Ellen talks about being a vegan and about seeing Earthlings:

She also talks about acceptance and civil rights for gays and lesbians, another issue the U.S. struggles with. If you want to skip to the Earthlings conversation it starts at 15:29 and ends at about 20 minutes.

In this Ellen compares Earthlings to the "happy meat" documentary Food Inc. that was popular here last year:

"Food Inc. is a Disney movie compared to Earthlings."

Great clip... I wonder if Ellen is aware of the abolitionistapproach blog entries about her... I bet she is, but I can't blame her for not bringing them up. Despite the mischaracterization of rights vs. welfare, she made a lot of really good points. They also briefly discuss it again about two minutes before the end. It's a shame she didn't lambaste the show's sponsor for testing on animals.

There are plenty of vegan celebrities who aren't educated about abolition. PETA has gotten to most of them. (And uses them too). Even if they have "heard" about abolition they have probably only heard about it second or third hand only hearing about it's misconcenceptions and myths. I doubt most of the celebrities have read about abolition in detail such as reading Gary's books and blogs. So Ellen probably has not read about herself on the abolitionist approach. There would be thousands of sources of media talking about Ellen both good and bad, she can't read them all (and shouldn't of course!).

Hey Scott and Suasoria, u wanna be facebook friends? You can leave me your email address if you like or your names, and then delete the post later after I've retrieved it and confirmed. I've been facebooking a lot more than I have been visiting the quiet Earthlings...

Have a great week end!

Sure, I would, except I don't use facebook or myspace or twitter or any of those sites. I'm actually kind of anti-social, not so much because of my misanthropy, but simply due to sheer laziness.

Ellen made an abolitionist-like comment when she started talking about the volume of production.

"You think about the consumption and how fast they have to mass produce, and you can't possibly put together in your head one healthy, happy animal. They're all in pain, they're all treated badly, they're all diseased, and they're all pumped with antibiotics."

Whether she realizes it or not, she's advocating against the welfarist position, at least with that one comment (despite the last part about antibiotics). Hell, I was so confused in my early 20s that I found old forum posts where I was arguing the rights position over welfare (without identifying it as such - because I didn't yet fully understand it except on a very abstract level) before I even stopped eating meat... and I had one of the longer ovo-lacto-veg periods (four full years, which I'm now not proud of anymore) before turning vegan.

Although maybe my situation is unique, because my original thinking was virtually identical to Gary's (before I ever knew he existed), and the main reason I was so impressed by his writing is because he's so much more skilled and efficient at expressing the viewpoint that he and I always shared than I could ever be. What mattered to me was that it was being said, and I could always use Gary's blog as a fallback position when I was having a hard time explaining to someone why I'm vegan. It didn't matter to me who was saying it. It just had to be said, and for that, I will always be grateful to Gary.

So yeah, I agree that she's probably been sucked in by Peta, but in a way, it's hard to blame her for it. I think it's still a small step in the right direction when someone like her suggests that "happy" meat isn't really the slightest bit happy. Maybe she's unknowingly a shill for Peta sometimes, but on a strictly personal and abstract level, I think she understands the difference between rights and welfare, and she falls on the correct side of the tracks, even if she calls it something else.

Of course it would be better if all abolitionists could get on the same page and use consistent language. But just the thoughts themselves are a good starting point in her case. I see a lot of potential for her in the future when it comes to abolition. Whether she reaches that potential is yet to be determined, but I really think it's there. She clearly has a history of courage in opposing cultural norms and stereotypes.

I venture to guess Ellen is mostly aware of the issues but isn't comfortable with the term "rights" (hence her joke about animals voting), maybe because as a gay woman she lacks certain human rights.

But more importantly, she's got a huge career and a huge television network riding on her being liked by mainstream people. There's something very special about her, no doubt...not many vegan lesbians would be so popular.

As for celebrities in general, I wonder what Gary has done in terms of outreach/PR in that area. Groups like PETA and HSUS dedicate time and effort there in order to be successful.

Nice vid. Of course, I disagree with a few things, but I think it's great that 'popular' people (though I didn't know her before checking this thread) come out and say these things (from her homosexuality to her veganism.)

I'm sure she comes out as a good example for many.

Sneaking on the facebook friends' thing... what about me, Su. I'm as sweet as sweet can get! (Or am I? )

Y'all take care!

Veganism is simply the acknowledgment that a replaceable and fleeting pleasure isn\'t more valuable than someone\'s life and liberty.
Go Vegan!
